AC Mar de Muros expedition to Cabo de Cruz

V Xuntanza Mariñeira Mar de Cabo

Mar de Muros was present on the weekend of 4–6 September at the 5th Xuntanza Mariñeira Mar de Cabo, held in Cabo de Cruz and organised by ACTM A Gamela.

On this occasion we brought three boats and 13 crew members, who joined the rest of the associations to make a total of 22 boats and almost a hundred participants, who gathered once again in Cabo to enjoy the programme’s activities in an always friendly atmosphere.

From Muros, the boats Raqueiro, Ostreira and Virxe do Carme were brought overland, the latter recently restored by our association following the loan agreement we reached with the Muros Fishermen’s Guild, the boat’s owner, for its use and promotion.

On Friday afternoon, after launching and mooring the boats, we attended the opening of the xuntanza, followed by the presentation of the maritime photography exhibition “As mulleres da Muller de Balboas”, by Hadriana Ordóñez Otero, and the monologue “Contos con mar de fondo” by Caxoto, all at the Ronsel restaurant of the Cabo de Cruz Yacht Club, which collaborated with the xuntanza. After these first events, the opening day ended with tavern songs in several local bars.

Saturday was reserved for the highlight of the weekend, which began with the buceta races, in which several crews from our association took part; we also lent Ostreira and Virxe do Carme so that other crews could row them, up to a total of four heats.

The first heat was for canoes with 2 rowers plus coxswain, and the remaining three for 4 rowers plus coxswain. In the latter, Mar de Muros Team A achieved second place rowing Virxe do Carme with an all-female crew, while Team B took third place, also aboard Virxe do Carme.

After the flag ceremony, the boats participating in the xuntanza headed to A Bensa for the traditional lunch on the batea (floating platform), which featured live traditional music and spontaneous dancing by the crews who felt like taking the floor.

The sail to the batea began with little wind and heat, allowing for a swim before lunch, but became somewhat more complicated on the return, when several strong gusts arose at the mouth of Cabo, forcing several boats to reef and even causing the breakage of a mast and a keel, without further consequences.

The night ended with a seafood rice dish and a concert by the band “Exquisitos Ghipes de Merda”, followed by performances by several orchestras as part of the local Castro festival programme.

Sunday had no specific programme, so we devoted the day to free sailing and to the hauling and return of Ostreira to Muros, where she remained afloat alongside the rest of our fleet to continue with the regular sails our association organises in our waters.

To conclude, we wish to send our friends at A Gamela in Cabo a warm embrace and our congratulations on the success of the xuntanza, which continues a long history of collaboration between both associations in defence of maritime culture.
